Tri-ang

Tri-ang was the trading name of Lines Bros, a company established in London in 1919. Famous brands produced by Tri-ang included Pedigree, Frog, Minic, Scalextric, Tri-ang railways, Arkitex and Spot-On. The company acquired Meccano Ltd in 1965, adding Dinky Toys and Hornby to the list as well.

Although in its heyday Tri-ang was a dominant force in the toy trade, its fortunes waned towards the end of the 1960s and the company finally went into receivership in 1971. Some of the major Tri-ang brands of course continued and flourished under new ownership.
Spot-OnSpot-On
The Spot-On range of diecast vehicles and accessories was produced by Tri-ang in Belfast, Northern Ireland between 1959 and 1967. Unlike their competitors, Spot-On models were to a constant scale of 1/42, a little larger than the Dinky and Corgi toys of that era. Another difference was that most of the models were available in several different colour schemes. Today Spot-On models are highly sought after by collectors.
ArkitexArkitex
Arkitex attempted to represent the 'modern' method of constructing bridges and office and apartment buildings. It used a system of plastic girders which were assembled to form a framework, to which you could then add floors and, finally, panels consisting of walls, windows and doors. The result was model buildings which had a contemporary feel. An unusual feature of Arkitex was that the components and sets were available in 2 scales: 1/42 to match the Spot-On range, and 00/HO guage to match Tri-ang model railways. Although Arkitex was cleverly designed, the small and medium sets only contained the components for making basic box-shaped buildings: if you wanted to make more interesting structures you needed special parts which came with the largest - and most expensive - sets. This probably contributed to the short lifespan of the range, introduced in 1961 and disappearing in 1965/1966. Nowadays some components, particularly those for apartment buildings, are very rare and sought-after.
