Black and white striped pole with black base and orange beacon. Belisha Beacons are used to mark pedestrian crossings. They are named after Leslie Hore-Belisha, the British Minister of Transport who in 1934 added these beacons to crossings. They pre-date the introduction of the striped 'zebra crossing' road markings which were introduced in 1949.
