This Wells fire escape is red tinplate with lithographed decoration in yellow and other colours. The wording 'FIRE ENGINE' appears on the sides, in case there was any doubt. The two-part extending ladder may be swivelled and elevated. There are three tinplate fireman figures; one is the driver, the other two are sittiing on the rear deck. On the rear is an 'M141' number plate, alongside the Wells O' London trademark. The clockwork motor drives the rear axle, and the fixed key protrudes just in front of one rear wheel. The front axle may be steered (manually positioned), so the model can go in circles. The wheels are also litho-printed tinplate.
In reasonably good condition and in working order, although some of the red areas have been overpainted, notably the top of the bonnet. The ladder also appears to have been touched-in. One of the seated firemen has lost one of the two tabs from his backside, so is loose.
