Based on a real vehicle built on a Maudslay chassis. Unlike most other Dinky Toys, this model was cast in aluminium for Meccano by BAC of Smethwick. Finished in maroon with silver grille and headlights, and red 'Supertoys' wheels with black tyres. Opening side and rear ramps.
This the U.S. export version of the model, so instead of 'Express Horse Box Hire Service' lettering and British Railways logos, it has 'EXPRESS HORSE VAN HIRE SERVICE' on both sides, and 'EXPRESS' on the front. It also has no '20' sign on the rear, as this would not apply to the U.S. market.
In excellent condition, with a few small chips around the ramps. It is in the early type blue box with orange, black and white paper label. This is a dual numbered box; the model was renumbered to 980 in 1954, and this number is stamped on one end. The box was later changed to the striped lidded 'Supertoys' type. There is an Orange 'H. HUDSON DOBSON' label on the side of the lid; Hudson Dobson was the U.S. distributor for Meccano products. Inside there are two packing pieces. The box is in good-to-excellent condition, with some crumpling of the lid at one end and a small surface tear on the label on the other end.
