Based on a real vehicle built on a Leyland Beaver chassis, this fine set is capable of carrying at least 8 Dinky cars. It was one of the largest and most expensive Dinky Supertoys in its time, so Dinky also made the carrier and trailer available separately as models 984 and 985 to enable the cost of purchase to be spread! It is surprisingly light though, since the sides and upper decks are cast in aluminium.
The model is finished in red with light grey decks and silver bumper, grille and headlights. The cab has a gloss black tinplate base. Both vehicles have drop-down rear ramps, and the carrier also has an upper deck that can be raised and lowered by turning the handle at the side, which operates a rack-and-pinion system underneath. The trailer upper deck is loaded via the carrier, by parking the vehicles are parked nose-to-nose; the trailer's drawbar locks onto the carrier's front number plate to keep them together. The drawbar and the front wheels of the trailer are mounted on a swivelling bogie. Both vehicles bear the wording 'Dinky Auto Service' on the sides in pale yellow.
These models are in excellent condition, a little light play wear but with everything in working order. The box still has its 5 internal packing pieces, and is in very good condition apart from a split at one corner of the lid.
