This tinplate London bus is interesting because it represents the first prototype of the famous Routemaster. Four prototypes were built, starting in 1954 with this one, RM1. The frontal styling differs from the production Routemaster; it has a shorter bonnet and no radiator grille, because the radiator was mounted under the floor behind the driver. This was to comply with the 27ft vehicle length limit in force at the time. In 1956 the legislation changed to allow up to 30ft, and RM1 was modified to a front-mounted radiator.
Anyway, the model is very nicely litho printed, with lots of detail including Esso adverts, passengers, driver and conductor, and 'RM1'on the side of the engine cover. I particularly like the upper deck passenger about to descend the stairs, visible through both the side and rear windows. The registration number, 110 MLK, was not used on the real vehicle as far as I know.
The wheels are black plastic, and the rear axle is driven by a push-and-go friction motor.
In very good condition, light play wear.
